Awudome Senior High School was established as a community day/boarding school in September, 1963 by Tsito Native Teachers’ Association (TNTA). Mr. William Haper Wheeler, an American educationist who was attached to the Awudome Residential Adult College as a social worker, was invited to head the proposed school.
The pioneer teachers were Messrs. W. H. Wheeler, Fred Buatsi, David Akortia, and David Dzansi. The school started with about fifty (50) students, of which 70% were natives of Tsito. The school was absorbed into the public system on 20th September, 1965.
Currently, the school offers six (6) programmes: General Arts, General Science, Home Economics, Visual Arts, Business and Agricultural Science. As at the 2022/23 academic year, the student population stood at two thousand four hundred and seventy-seven (2,477), made up of one thousand one hundred and ninety-nine (1,199) boys and one thousand two hundred and seventy-eight (1,278) girls. The teaching staff strength was 143, with 55 non-teaching staff.
The school is located at Tsito Awudome on the Ho-Accra highway, not far from Ho, the Volta Regional capital. It is sited on approximately 60.5 acres of land and has a proactive Board of Governors, a supportive Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and a vibrant Old Students’ Association (OSUA).
The school has a modern administration block, four well-equipped ICT laboratories, a spacious arena for co-curricular activities, an Audio Visual Learning Centre and an Electronic Learning Management Support system to enhance teaching and learning.
Awudome Senior High School has excelled in many fields, including consistent appearances at the National Science and Mathematics Quiz competition, district championship in the 2023 inter-school debate competition, and overall championship in the 2023 inter-school sports and games competition.
The school continues to pursue major development needs, including a 3,000-seating capacity assembly hall, an 18-unit classroom block, additional dormitory facilities, staff accommodation, classroom furniture, bunk beds, improved sanitation facilities, completion of the fence wall project, a 66-seater bus, and a pickup.
